How would you grade your student art projects?
For educators who are dealing with a subject that is purely based on right or wrong answers, grading students becomes an easy affair as all they have to do is check if their project or the answers in their tests are correct or false. However, a big problem that an art educator will have to face while teaching an art course of any kind is when it comes to grading his or her students; this is mainly because art is so subjective and there is no such concept of etch right or the wrong piece of work- it all depends on what the perspective of the student is.
However there is some art education tips that you as an art educator can utilize to come up with a stronger assessment structure for your students, so that you are as fair as you can be when it comes to judging your students art projects.
Among these art education tips for formulating an assessment structure would include the basic craftsmanship of the artist of course. Art is really all about appearance and therefore the overall neatness and the cleanliness of the artwork should make a lot of difference in your assessment. Even if you think that the drawing is a beautiful one but it has been done on a crumpled piece of paper or the colors used do not suit the image, then you have every right to mark the artwork down. However as a teacher you can also provide the students with your list of the criteria that you think would qualify a piece of art as being executed best as far as craftsmanship goes and what are the faults that you can find with the craftsmanship as well.
The other criteria for grading your students’ art work should be the effort and the time that the student puts into the work of art. You must make sure that the piece of art that the student worked on was well thought out or even if it was spontaneous the project was one that had some kind of an inspiration after having worked at it for the designated period of time. As an experienced art educator you should be able to tell the difference between works of art that has been given some thought and another one on which much time or effort was not spent. Enthusiasm and effort therefore should also play a major role when you are grading an art work over something that probably suits or sensibility or not.
Of course before you start grading your students artwork or rather before you set the project itself you must establish the ground rules for your marking so that your students can concentrate on those while working on their art. However, while the visual effect that the art piece creates is the basic factor that determines a good art work from a bad one, creating any kind of impression itself is a measure of how significant the art is. These are some of the art education tips that you need to keep in mind while grading.
